The Çanakkale Art Prize is an initiative of the Gallipoli Memorial Club in Sydney and Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University. Two awards are given each year - one to an Australian or New Zealand artist and one to a Turkish artist - for the works which best represent the values and traditions embodied in those who served in the Gallipoli Campaign of 1915.
“This is a 10-year project. Through this project we would like to enhance the already strong bonds between our countries. In 2015, when the special centenary commemorations will be held, all the first prize winners will have their works exhibited in Turkey, Australia and New Zealand.” Ambassador Ian Biggs said in Ankara.
Meanwhile, Director General of Press and Information Murat Karakaya in his speech said, “I would like to take this occasion to commemorate with respect Ghazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk together with all our beloved martyrs and soldiers who lost their lives in Çanakkale and thank everyone who contributed to this exhibition.”
In this year's competition, Sema Sevgen received the First Prize Award, Nebi Yavaşca the Governor of Çanakkale’s Prize, Tayfun Gülnar received the Ambassador’s Prize and Ufuk Ülker received the Rector of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University’s Prize.
Among the guests were the Ambassadors of Canada Mark Bailey and his wife Raja, Ambassador of Ireland Tom Russell, Ambassador of Bangladesh Zulfiqur Rahman, Chargé d’Affaires of New Zealand Rene Wilson and British Defense Attaché Col. Richard Fraser Robinson.
The exhibition can be viewed between 9 am and 5 pm until Friday 18 November 2011 excluding Sundays.
Following the closure of this exhibition the 2012 Canakkale Art Prize will be open to submissions which close on 18 March 2012.
